Round & About St. Sophie

The parish Christmas Luncheon (Kutia) will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2008 after the Divine Liturgy . Everyone is invited to attend.. Expect a great meal and to sing Christmas carols.

While the painting of our sanctuary is taking place, there has been no let up in parish activities. After the Divine Liturgy & everyone has kissed the cross, we gather for coffee, a time in the week that offers many people an opportunity to meet with their friends & fellow parishioners. In recent weeks, we have been visited by a number of new arrivals from Ukraine and they, in turn, meet not only with Fr. Volodymyr but also with each other. We encourage long time parishioners to extend a welcome to all who come to pray in our church and to make them feel at home. A smile, a few words and you’ve made somebody feel that St. Sophie’s is the place to be..

We take this opportunity to welcome our new choir director, Tanya Novolska. With her profound love of liturgical singing & her energetic directing, she has awakened in all of us a new appreciation for the role which the choir plays in the Sunday service. The choir is always looking to have new members join its ranks. Anyone interested should just speak to Tanya after Sunday service. Rehearsals are held every Monday at 7:30 p.m.

For the youth in our parish, there are several avenues to explore. There is Ukrainian School every Saturday morning under the direction of Dobr. Popovich (514-366-3684). Tanya Novolska also teaches the bandura, our national instrument, on church premises; call her (514-554-4894) for more information. On Saturday afternoon, the youth dance group “Ìè” gathers for practices – anyone interested in joining should call Dobr. Popovich (514-366-3684) or Fr. Volodymyr (514-727-2236).

The women of our parish gather regularly to make varynyky. UWAC – Daughters of Ukraine organizes these events and then sells frozen varynyky. If you enjoyed our varynyky at the Ukrainian Festival, then buy some to enjoy at home now or get them in time for Holy Supper. Olga Narepecka (514- 376-8012) will be happy to serve you.

With the snow coming – and staying - so early in December, our elderly members are reluctant to venture forth onto icy streets, and so they miss the whole experience of attending Sunday Service and seeing their friends. If you know of a shut-in, make the effort to call them. Should they fall sick, then please inform Fr. Volodymyr. (514-727-2236)

Starting January 19, 2007, Fr. Volodymyr will begin the blessing of your homes.

As in past years, you will be informed of the time of the visit 3 or 4 days ahead.

Christ is Born! Let us Glorify Him!
